For over twenty years I have researched my father’s grandfather Gottlieb Sommer. All I knew about him in the beginning was his name, and that he was from Germany. He was married to "Annie", my father’s grandmother. Annie and Gottlieb were the parents of his mother, Elizabeth Agnes Sommer.
Over the years I searched the Federal Census Records and learned other things; the year he was born, when he arrived in America from Wuerttemberg, how many children he had and when, when he lived in Baltimore, Maryland and when he lived in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and when he died and where he was buried. However, no matter where or how I searched, I could not find his family. I could not find his father and mother or his siblings.
He came to America on October 27, 1870 when he was 18, aboard the S.S. Minnesota, apparantly alone. He arrived in New York.

Accoring to the Federal Census Records, by 1880 he was married to Annie Amrhein and had children. Although I knew he was from Germany I had no idea where in Germany to search. I thought perhaps I could find the information through the Gottlieb Sommer’s family (another mystery to me). I did not know any of them but knew that two of Gottlieb and Annie’s sons had lived and raised families in Williamsport. So I looked in a phone book for any “Sommer” families living in Williamsport today. I wrote a letter requesting information on the Amrhein and Sommer families, made copies and sent them to the addresses I had discovered. It was not two weeks later when I received a letter from Dolores Sommer-Wesley. It turns out she has been researching this family also. Her grandfather was Charles J. Sommer, a brother of my grandmother, Elizabeth Agnes Sommer-Knittle, both children of Gottlieb and Annie. Her father and my father were first cousins!
She sent along a copy of an old document written by Charles J. Sommer’s wife with the birth dates and places and death dates for Gottlieb and Annie. This was an exciting find. The document indicated that Gottlieb had been born in "Fulingen", Wuerttemberg. After some research, I realized that it was in a place called "Pfullingen that he was born.

"Gottlieb" Sommer, born 23 Mar 1852 in Pfullingen, Schwarzwaldkreis,
Wuerttemberg, Germany to Johann Sommer and Beatrice Mader. After
many months of painstaking research of the old German records, I
was able to take the line back to Herr Andreas Sommer who was born
about 1590 and Margaretha Hilderand both born in Ravensburg, Wuerttemberg,
Germany.Gottlieb went to Germany to visit relatives in 1924 when he was 72 years old. I found this out by looking in the Ellis Island records. He came through Ellis Island. He had to have a passport, so I looked into getting a copy of it. I got real lucky because in 1923 it became manditory to include pictures on them. I was hoping to see what he looked like. The following is what I received from the State Department:

Pfullingen is located near Reutlingen at the bottom of the Schwaebische Alb. With a population of about 18.000 inhabitants, it's the third largest city in the county of Reutlingen.
After the detection of historical pieces historians estimate, that in the area of Pfullingen there have been settlements already 3.000 before Jesus Christ. Around 260 the area become the headquarter of an "Alemmannen" settlement, who was lead by "Phulo". From him Pfullingen got its name as 'people from Phulo'. In the early days of the middle ages Pfullingen even had their own coins, weight and measurement. In a letter found in the nunnery even a own Pfullinger currency is mentioned.
In 937 Pfullingen received the fishing rights from Emperor Otto I. Wolfgang, the Bishop of Regensburg, who lived from 938 - 994 and Kuno the Archbishop of Trier, who was killed in 1066 have been important descendants of the Dukes of Pfullingen. During the city wars Pfullingen was destroyed in 1311 and burned down three times between 1377 to 1388.
During the 16th century Pfullingen was fully owned by the Dukes of Württemberg. In 1596 Pfullingen received their own rights like pillory, prison etc. The former castle today serves as youth and cultural center.
In 1699 Pfullingen received back the city rights and was until 1806 capital of the county.

Trade and industry have a long tradition in Ravensburg – favourable situated on two trade routes, the free Imperial city of Ravensburg developed in the 14th century to one of the leading trade-towns of upper Germany. At the end of the middle ages, especially in the 14th and 15th century Ravensburg has had its flowering time.
This was the time which brought wealth and opulence to Ravensburg – conditioned by the trade with linon, material and paper. This was the time in which the mayor part of the impressing building were built. The “Big Ravensburger Tradecompany“ had trade relations with a big part of Europe until Spain and Poland. Members of this company have been the distinguished patrician families and merchants. In the chapel of the “Evangelische Stadtkirche” you can visit the gravestone of Henggi Humpis, one of the most important and famous traders of that times.
The roots of Ravensburg reach far back: under the citadel ”Ravensburg”-once the main place of the Guelfes - in the 12th century grew a settlement which soon reached the marketpermission and 1276 was titeled with Free Imperial City.
Until the Thirty Years War Ravensburg lived in wealth. Although the artisans had a good image and a good life in Ravensburg. Because of this Ravensburg was one of the first towns in Germany which produced paper with help of machines.

....... Wildflecken, a town of approximately 3,600 inhabitants, is well-known to American soldiers, civilians, and their families, because it has a huge training area. Starting in 1936 under Hitler's regime, laborers built a village (Camp Wildflecken) and a training area with ranges. The inhabitants of seven villages and a few hamlets (Weiler) and mills had to leave their homes. The villages had only between 50 and 400 inhabitants. Most of the villages were demolished during 1938 and Werberg in 1973 by training U.S. troops. The following villages/hamlets and mills disappeared from all maps:
REUSSENDORF, first mentioned in 1579, including the farms ADAMSHOF, SARAHOF, HEINRICHSHOF, and FUCHSENMUEHLE

Bob was in the Army during World War II. He was released in the desert in California after the War. After living with Bill and Lahlee for a short while, he got a job as a fireman for Los Angeles County. He was assigned to the fire station in Topanga Canyon, California. That is where he met Anna May whom he married and with whom he had six children. After that, the rest of the brothers traveled to California and eventually lived in Topanga Canyon near him.
Bob suffered from diabetes later in life and was blind for several years before his death.
Bob wanted to be cremated, have no funeral service and be buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery. As he requested, he is buried in the: Riverside National Cemetery

Valley Springs resident Edward Leroy Knittle died May 30 at his daughter's home in Valley Springs. He was 80.
He was born in Williamsport, Pa. He had lived in Valley Springs for a couple of years, later moved to Reno and recently moved back to Valley Springs.
He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Shannon during World War II. He entertained the troops, his family and his friends with his guitar.
He also enjoyed barbecues with his family and working in his shop.
Mr. Knittle is survived by his daughters, Carol Hanson, of Thousand Oaks, and Joni Bruegel, of Valley Springs; sons, Ed Knittle and Richard Knittle, both of Reno; and five grandchildren.
Private services are scheduled. San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

....... Wildflecken, a town of approximately 3,600 inhabitants, is well-known to American soldiers, civilians, and their families, because it has a huge training area. Starting in 1936 under Hitler's regime, laborers built a village (Camp Wildflecken) and a training area with ranges. The inhabitants of seven villages and a few hamlets (Weiler) and mills had to leave their homes. The villages had only between 50 and 400 inhabitants. Most of the villages were demolished during 1938 and Werberg in 1973 by training U.S. troops. The following villages/hamlets and mills disappeared from all maps:
REUSSENDORF, first mentioned in 1579, including the farms ADAMSHOF, SARAHOF, HEINRICHSHOF, and FUCHSENMUEHLE
