David Duggins/Dougan (far right) and family. Randolph County, Missouri. Descendant of Reuben Duggins.

David Dougan was born and lived in Randolph County, Missouri until at least 1860, as listed in the U.S. Federal Census of 1850 and 1860. He was a private, Co., G., 35th Arkansas Infantry in the Civil War. Listed as personal characteristics: 6’1” tall, dark hair, blue eyes, carpenter. His service was as a soldier in Col. James P. King’s 22nd Regiment of Infantry Co. G from the State of Arkansas. This Regiment was also known as 22nd Arkansas (variously Rector’s – King’s – McCord’s) Infantry Regiment. It was organized by individual companies in June 1862 and then joined together as the 35th on July 11, 1862. This regiment fought in the Battle of Prarie Grove December 7-8, 1862 and then retreated to Van Buren. On July 4, 1863 the 35th Arkansas served in the attack on the Federal post at Helena and again in the defense of Little Rock in September, 1863. They spent the winter of 1863 in the vicinity of Arkadelphia and were then directed south to Shreveport, Louisiana in the spring of 1864 where they assisted General Kirby Smith’s Army in countering Union General Nathaniel Banks’ advance along the Red River. They fought the Battle of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana and then marched back to Arkansas to assist General Price in the second half of the Red River campaign. This regiment also saw action at Jenkins Ferry on April 30, 1864. The 35th saw no further substantial combat action for the remainder of the war and ultimately surrendered with Kirby Smith’s army May 26, 1865.

David Dougan lost the sight of his left eye and was thrown from a train during his service in the war. Afterwards he married Sarah Martha Jane Johnson, with whom he had three children. Sarah died May 23, 1882 and is buried in Rudy in the Johnson Cemetery. David Dougan and Lucinda Brim were married October 22, 1882 in Crawford County. At some point afterwards they located in Winslow, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Perhaps before and maybe after, but at least during the years between 1900 and 1910 David Dougan owned and operated a blacksmith shop in Winslow. It was located on Woolem Street between the Episcopal Church and the T. E. Gray residence. He was one of the signers of the petition to incorporate the town of Winslow in 1905. David Dougan died in 1919 and is buried near Winslow in the Park Cemetery.
