The Amrhein Family
of
Reussendorf, Brückenau Region, Lower Franconia (Unterfranken), BavariaFor over twenty years I have researched my father’s grandmother “Annie”. All I knew about her in the beginning was her name, “Annie” and that she was from Germany. She was married to Gottlieb Sommer, my father’s grandfather. Annie and Gottlieb were the parents of his mother, Elizabeth Agnes Sommer.
Over the years I searched the Federal Census Records and learned other things, the year she was born, when she arrived in America from Bavaria, how many children she had and when, when she lived in Baltimore, Maryland and when she lived in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and when she died and where she was buried. However, no matter where or how I searched, I could not find her family. I could not find her father and mother and siblings. I did not know her maiden name.
Through records from St. Boniface Catholic Church in Williamsport, I did discover her real given name and maiden name, “Anastasia Agnes Ammarein”. “Annie” was a nickname. It took many more months of research to discover “Ammarein” was a misspelling. The correct spelling was “Amrhein”. I found this on the birth certificate for her daughter, Elizabeth Agnes Sommer, my grandmother.
She arrived in America in 1866 when she was thirteen, this was in the Federal Census Records. She was a servant in the home of Jacob Miller in the 1870 Baltimore Federal Census. By 1880 she was married to Gottlieb Sommer and had children. There was no way to connect her to any of the Amrhein families in Baltimore and none existed in Williamsport.
I had no other choice than to research all of the Amrhein families in Baltimore and hope to find some clues. It took me a long time but I was able to narrow it down to 5 or 6 families. Looking at ages, places of birth, etc, I then narrowed it down to 2 families, Caspar Amrhein and Joseph Amrhein. The records showed they came to America around 1865. The remainder of Amrhein families had arrived in the 1850’s or 1870’s.
I checked the immigration records and found, indeed, Caspar and Joseph had come to America together in 1865 aboard the Neptune. They arrived in Baltimore on September 13, 1865. Their ages made them brothers and they were both joiners (carpenters). Most ships did not give the names of the women and children. I have nothing that states the families came with them. I am only assuming, combined with the Census Record of Annie Sommer saying she arrived in 1866 when she was a very old woman. I have concluded that, either she made a mistake on the Census Record and was on the ship with Caspar and Joseph, or the men sailed ahead of the families and they came later in 1866, but I can find no record to confirm that.
I still did not know which of the brothers was her father and decided that I may never know. I was about to give up the search and be content with what I had discovered when I had an idea. I thought perhaps I could find the information through the Gottlieb Sommer’s family (another mystery to me). I did not know any of them but knew that two of Gottlieb and Annie’s sons had lived and raised families in Williamsport. So I looked in a phone book for any “Sommer” families living in Williamsport today. I wrote a letter requesting information on the Amrhein and Sommer families, made copies and sent them to the addresses I had discovered. It was not two weeks later when I received a letter from Dolores Sommer-Wesley. It turns out she has been researching this family also. Her grandfather was Charles J. Sommer, a brother of my grandmother, Elizabeth Agnes Sommer-Knittle, both children of Gottlieb and Annie. Her father and my father were first cousins!
She sent along a copy of an old document written by Charles J. Sommer’s wife with the birth dates and places and death dates for Gottlieb and Annie. This was an exciting find. However, I could not find the place for Annie’s birth on any map. I then decided to join the Roots Web List for Bavaria, Germany. I was hoping that someone would know where this place was and maybe someone could explain to me how to find information for the Amrhein family in Bavaria. I was so surprised and overwhelmed with what happened next.
I received several email from well meaning people with ideas that could be helpful. I also received an e-mail from Walter Koempel who stated that he was quite sure he knew where my family was from. This is what he wrote:
Needless to say I was very excited. I wrote back to him with more information including a copy of the document I had received from Dolores Sommer-Wesley. The next e-mail from him made me cry when I read it. Walter had found my Amrhein family!!!
“Hello,
I have contacted you a few days ago. I`ve searched my records and I am pretty sure that I found the one you are looking for. Anastasia Amrhein was born on 30 July 1853 in Reussendorf as the second child of Kaspar Amrhein, born on 16 Aug 1822 and married to Salome Müller who was born on 7 July 1824 in Steinach. Kaspar Amrhein married Salome Müller on 16 Apr 1850. Kaspar Amrheim`s profession was a carpenter. Their first child was Veronika who was born on 5 Feb 1851.If you are interested I can send you more detailed information on Reussendorf`s history and other things.
Hope to hear from you
Sincerely
Walter Kömpel”Walter and I continued to write back and forth. He sent me articles about Ruessendorf and Oberbach, pictures, websites, etc. I am including all of what he sent on this website.
Walter’s next e-mail was about the history of Reussendorf:
“Hello Susan,
I will give you some information about the history of Reussendorf: Reussendorf was located up in the mountains with an elevation over 2100 feet above the sea level. So you can imagine how the living conditions were: long and very cold winters, short summers and a bad vegetation. So real poor people!!!
HISTORY:
In the year 1579 one single farm house called the Reussenhof was the first house. In the year 1691 settlers from Oberbach (that is the village where I am living) were authorized to erect 18 houses near the mountains called Dammersfeld.
In the year 1803 the first school was erected. In the year 1885 a new school was built. In the year 1885 a church was built. Up to the year 1897 the dead bodies were buried in Oberbach. After that they had their own cemetery between the villages of Reussendorf and Silberhof.
In the year 1938 all the people had to leave their homes. Only the ones who worked for them for the training area could stay.
According to the records approx. 253 inhabitants used to live in Reussendorf.
In the year 1952 the village was completed de-settled. In the year 1955 the whole village was demolished by US troops, who became the owner of the training area including camp Wildflecken.
In the year 1938 the following Amrheins were living in Reussendorf:
House number 22: Franz Josef Amrhein moved to Dietesheim
House number 26: Phillip Amrhein who moved to Oberriedenberg
Karl Amrhein who moved to Fischersdorf near Deggendorf
House number 30: Otto Amrhein stayed there
I can send you a photograph from Oberbach`s Church were all your ancestors were baptized, got married or even were buried.
I also have some photographs showing the former village of Reussendorf.
If you would like to see a few photographs of Reussendorf online, check out this website: http://www.rhoenline.de Look for "Geschichte" which means history.
I also have a website: www.black-hills.org showing you some of our scenery.
************
Now I have a few questions for you:
Where did Anastasia settle in the US???
The person she got married to, where was he from??
Are you still living in the same area where Anastasia settled????
It was very common that the people who were living real close together in our area also settled in the US also near-by.
Hope to hear from you again!!!
Greetings
Walter Kömpel”I went to the websites Walter suggested and learned more about the area. Then wrote back to him. He wrote back:

FORGOTTEN VILLAGES IN NORTHERN BAVARIA
by Walter Koempel
WKoempel@t-online.de
[The author resides in Oberbach near Wildflecken, Germany, and is the chronicler for the villages of Oberwildflecken, Wildflecken, and Oberbach.]
While researching my wife's ancestors, I found references to a place called Herrenbreitungen. I checked the telephone directory, zip code book and other sources, but could not find anything. One day I went to the archive in Wuerzburg and on my way out noticed hanging on the wall a map of the area in the 16th century. My eyes lit upon the town I was looking for. It is now called Breitungen in Thuringia. In the region here I live a number of villages have similarly disappeared. Perhaps your ancestor came from one of them and you have wondered why you could not find it.
The Rhoen Highlands, with an elevation of 1,000 to 3,000 feet, are in Bavaria, Hesse, and Thuringia, Germany, approximately 80 miles from Frankfurt, 60 miles north of Wuerzburg, and 20 miles southeast of Fulda. The first settlements in this region were built after 800 A. D. The area was always poor, with long winters, a cold climate, not-very-good-farming land, and no work. In the 18th century, many people emigrated from this area to the U.S.A. to find better living conditions.
Wildflecken, a town of approximately 3,600 inhabitants, is well known to American soldiers, civilians, and their families, because it has a huge training area. Starting in 1936 under Hitler's regime, laborers built a village (Camp Wildflecken) and a training area with ranges. The inhabitants of seven villages and a few hamlets (Weiler) and mills had to leave their homes.
The villages had only between 50 and 400 inhabitants. Most of the villages were demolished during 1938 and Werberg in 1973 by training U.S. troops. The following villages/hamlets and mills disappeared from all maps:
REUSSENDORF, first mentioned in 1579, including the farms ADAMSHOF, SARAHOF, HEINRICHSHOF, and FUCHSENMUEHLE NEUGLASHUETTEN, first mentioned in 1684 ALTGLASHUETTEN, including the hamlets (Weiler) BRUECKE, HARFENMUEHLE, WIESENHAUS and HAUS FRANKEN, since 1609 SILBERHOF since 1696 ROTHENRAIN, including DISBACHHOF, DISBACHMUEHLE and EBERTSHOF, since 1557 DOERRENBERG since the 18th century WERBERG, with the hamlet of AUERSBERG, since 1260 KIPPELBACH since 1542 (state of Hesse)

Re: Johann Weber Amrhein
Hello Again,
Johanna Weber Amrhein came to the United States with Kaspar in 1865. She had another child "George". He lived to be at least 12. I found him in both the 1870 and 1880 Census records. I have not been able to find him after that.
She died in Baltimore, Maryland.
Thanks so much.

I spent a few hours in both archives in Würzburg and
found another piece for your puzzle.
Elisabetha Reuss born 26 Feb 1797 in Unterleichtersbach
married on 6 Feb 1821 Johann Amrhein.
today I found Elisabetha`s death date:
She died on: 7 Dec 1879 in Reussendorf, house number 21!!! The
reason was weakness of her age.

....... Wildflecken, a town of approximately 3,600 inhabitants, is well-known to American soldiers, civilians, and their families, because it has a huge training area.
